Systemic toxicity of local anaesthetics

Articles PDF

Abstract

LAST is a serious adverse event of LA use which potentially might cause the patient`s death. In order to prevent LAST, it is necessary to take precaution measures, to use less toxic drugs in their minimal effective doses, to implement administration of the drug while constantly observing the patient, to frequently aspirate and execute procedures under ultrasound control. Immediate discontinuation of LA administration is of vital importance in the case of LAST formation. If the patient develops life-threatening symptoms and/or clinical death, lipid emulsion should be administered during resuscitation.
