Abstract

For about 60 years, antibiotics have controlled many life-threatening illnesses, and reduced death and disease. However, since then, the use of antibiotics has caused more and more bacteria to become resistant to the same elements that once defeated them. The author reviews the basic trends of resistance in Estonia. Particular aspects of the emergence of resistance in bacterial population are emphasised. Some principles of antibacterial treatment that might reverse the current trends are highlighted.
