Abstract

Aging and degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs occur earlier than in any other supportive connective tissue structure. Furthermore, intervertebral discs degeneration is considered the main cause of lower back pain. However, current clinical treatments, including conservative and surgical methods, only target symptoms and cannot inhibit disease progression or cure the disease at its root cause. New developments in genetics and biomedicine may provide improved diagnostic options, reduce the likelihood of disc prolapse, and enhance treatment effectiveness.
