Abstract
Transfusion medicine is a branch of medicine dealing with the preparation and use of medicines made from human blood. Blood centres
are often in the focus of media as a place where donor blood is collected, as information and public attention are essential to ensure a sufficient number of donor visits for the daily supply of blood to hospitals. The part of transfusion medicine that takes place within
hospital walls has received less coverage. The North Estonia Medical Centre (PERH) has recently had developments in this field that
could be interesting and useful for colleagues in other hospitals as well. Low titer 0 positive whole blood has been introduced, significant changes in the organisation of work due to the renewal of blood transfusion regulations have been implemented, e-training in blood transfusion for doctors has been completed and well received, and progress has been made in patient blood management.
