Abstract

Phytophotodermatitis is a cutaneous reaction caused after skin is exposed to phototoxic agents in plants followed by exposure to direct sunlight. Many common species, including hogweed and citrus fruits, contain furocoumarins (e.g. psoralen) which can cause this non-allergic skin reaction. The wide variety of presentations and similarities to other skin conditions like cellulitis, burns, contact dermatitis etc., may make diagnosis difficult. Considering the constant changes towards warmer climate in our region, phytophotodermatitis needs to be considered more as a possible diagnosis.
