Abstract

Although cancer incidence in pregnant patients is rare, breast cancer is the most common malignancy diagnosed during pregnancy. Cancer treatment in pregnant patients is complex and requires attention to both the patient and tumor-related factors, as well as the fetus in case of pregnancy preservation without making major compromises in treatment efficacy. Effective radical treatment, pregnancy preservation and successful delivery are achievable, as our case illustrates. We present a case of a young pregnant patient with stage II, HER2- positive breast cancer, who was also found to carry a BRCA2 germline mutation. She was successfully treated during pregnancy with curative intent and delivered a healthy term infant. A framework of pregnancy related breast cancer treatment principles is presented to support the case discussion.
