Abstract
Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) are widely used in the treatment of premature newborns. Cardiac tamponade is an extremely rare but serious complication of this procedure with a high mortality rate without timely diagnosis and treatment. However, correct diagnosis and management bring high success rates. The article describes a case of cardiac tamponade in a premature newborn and successful management. This article focuses on potential early signs of the condition and emphasizes remaining vigilant when monitoring a patient with a PICC line, in order to recognize the early symptoms of cardiac tamponade and suggest treatment of the condition in case of sudden deterioration.
