Abstract

Around the globe, corona virus disease-19 (COVID-19) has been a challenge to the healthcare system due to the large number of patients and high need for treatment
in intensive care units. One of the most common complications of the disease is acute respiratory distress syndrome. Therefore, the cornerstone of treatment is oxygen therapy, which is usually provided as high flow nasal oxygen or mechanical ventilation in intensive care. Several drug treatments have been tested, but only remdesivir and
dexamethasone, which have antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects, respectively, have been introduced in routine clinical practise. In the absence of contraindications, anticoagulants should also be used, as thromboembolic complications are fairly common. As COVID-19 has increased the pressure on intensive care units around the world, vaccination and effective treatments are critical components for putting an end to this pandemic.
