Historical overview of the research conducted at the Department of Family Medicine, University of Tartu, Estonia, during 1991–2016

Abstract

The research area of the Department of Family Medicine involved common clinical problems and organizational aspects of family medicine in the health care system. PhD dissertations were prepared by members of the department to fulfill the criteria for academic speciality at the university. Family doctors residency training included research projects as well. The results of the research were used in the management of patients’ problems, in the development of guidelines and in guiding the health care system towards family medicine. Family medicine research needs further advancement, new family doctors with a PhD degree, continuation of research projects in residency training and participation in topics prioritized by healthcare.
