Abstract

Appendectomy has been standard treatment for acute appendicitis for over a century. With a better understanding of the pathophysiology of appendicitis, improvements in diagnostic imaging and antibiotics have prompted to ask the question whether we should shift our approach from surgical treatment towards nonoperative management of appendicitis. The purpose of this article was to review recent suggestions and evidence based on trends in the nonsurgical treatment of acute appendicitis.
