Struma ovarii. A case report and a literature overview

Abstract

Struma ovarii is a rare type of ovarian tumour. Sructurally, it belongs to the teratomas, containing more than 50 % of the thyroid tisuse, and may be hormonally active, associated with thyreotoxicosis. In most of cases SO is benign, but in 5% of cases it may be malignant. Clinical symptoms of SO are usually nonspecific and mild. Different imaging modalities, e.g. ultrasound, CT and MRI, are used for detecting ovarian tumours Definite diagnosis of SO is based on postoperative histopathological investigation.A case report of SO in a 43-year- old female is described.
