Abstract

Thumb gives the opportunity to pick up smaller and larger objects and provides up to 50% of the hand’s function (1). Thumb hypoplasia is a rare congenital difference in which the child is born with an underdeveloped or a missing thumb. It accounts for ~5-15% of all congenital hand anomalies. There is no gender disposition but often both hands are affected, though the findings may vary (2). Pollicization means construction of a usable thumb by moving the index finger to the thumb position. This article presents a case in which the child was born with bilateral thumb hypoplasia and had pollicization surgery performed on both hands. Although it is considered a complicated surgery, it has remained favored by the pediatric hand surgeons and has not lost its popularity over the years because of its good outcomes.
