Treatment with biologicals in rheumatology

Abstract

The advent of biologicals in rheumatology has had a revolutionary impact on the treatment of chronic inf lammatory joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ancylosing spondylitis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Thereby the patients’ health and quality of life has improved considerably, making these as similar as possible to those of healthy people.

The current article gives an overview of the management of the above-mentioned rheumatic diseases with biologicals: mechanisms of action, eff ectiveness, side effects, threats and problems in everyday clinical practice.

The article explores the most recent modes of treatment with biologicals for systemic lupus erythematosus and osteoporosis.
