Abstract

The present article gives a brief overview of microscopes used in dentistry, the so-called dental opearting microscopes. Explanation is provided for some differences between the dental operating microscope and the surgical operating microscope. A description of specific additional equipment for the microscope, e.g. different coaxial light sources and integrated video and photography equipment, is presented.  The benefits of ergonomic operating (working) positions in working with the microscope are described. An overview is given of the advantages of microdentistry compared to general dentistry. The need for using the microscope in different dental procedures, particularly in endodontics, is specified. Microscope usage in cariology, paradontology and prosthetics is briefly discussed.
