Abstract

This review article systematically summarizes current evidence related to the prevention of venous thromboembolism and provides evidence-based recommendations for different surgical procedures. Perioperative anticoagulation is a safe and effective treatment modality when used carefully. For moderate and high risk patients, thromboprophylaxis with low-molecular-weight heparin, low-dose unfractionated heparin or fondaparinux is recommended.
