Abstract

The immunoprophylaxis of infectious diseases in Estonia has gained good results. In 1928 the spread of smallpox ended due to the vaccination of children and in 1961 the epidemic spread of acute poliomyelitis was terminated due to the mass vaccination of population. The last case of measles was recorded in 2000. This paper presents data on the results of prevention of mumps and rubella.
Due to immunoprophylaxis the number of disease cases has been reduced. In 2002 only 2.6 cases of mumps and 7.0 cases of rubella per 100 000 inhabitants were recorded. It is expected that in the subsequent years the spread of mumps and rubella will cease in Estonia.
