Abstract

In spring 2002, a number of cases of viral meningitis (ICD-10 A87) were described from Saaremaa county, Estonia. From March 9 to June 1 nineteen persons were hospitalised. In the same period fever (380–390C), headache, nausea and vomiting without meningeal symptoms (ICD-10 B34) were observed in 40 persons. Mainly children and teenagers were affected. Echovirus 6 was isolated from the stool samples of the patients in both groups. The disease had a monophasic course and lasted on the average 7 days. In Estonia outbreaks of enterovirus-associated meningitis are described from time to time.
